Now that Internet Explorer is out of the way finally, Microsoft is taking up enormous efforts to ensure that Microsoft Edge is taking up the Browser marketplace with its features and usability and kind of deservedly so. I kind of despise the fact that Google Chrome is taking up a huge space in the browser industry even though it’s definitely a superior product. Poor Firefox.
We are going to talk about the Efficiency Mode in Edge which can be a huge boost to the performance of the browsing experience and make you work longer with less battery. Even though it’s pretty good, it can definitely take a toll on your RAM and needless to say, performance. So, it can be a good thing to disable it if you are focused on durability rather than extreme performance.
What does Efficiency Mode do?
Efficiency Mode (earlier known as Performance Mode) is a setting in Microsoft Edge that helps you optimize speed, responsiveness, memory, CPU and battery usage. One thing that you need to remember is that it also might vary depending on your individual specifications and browser habits.
Please be noted that the video playback and also animations as part of the web pages might not be great in this Efficiency Mode. Also, when this mode is enabled, if there are inactive tabs that have been dormant for more than 5 minutes will be automatically put to sleep to enable efficiency. When they are in sleep mode, the page reloads when you open those inactive tabs again.
There have been mixed feelings among users who have been mentioned in online forums. Some say it’s good for the longevity of the PC you are using but some are arguing it takes a big swing at the overall user experience. Needless to say, you can be the judge of it yourself.
You might need to download Edge Canary to use this feature as of July 2021. When Windows 11 goes public later this year, we can expect this to be available in Microsoft Edge as a stable feature.
