Blackboards were made up of slate and surrounded by a wooden border a support to prevent it from breaking. Slate is the material obtained from fine-grained metamorphic rock and was the biggest inventions in terms of educational technology during the 19th century. The use of blackboards was gradually reduced and was replaced with the whiteboard and markers because of the chalk dust which resulted in potential health risks.

Slates and Chalk

It was the best tool during the 1900’s as students used slates to practice by writing alphabets, words and solving math problems both in their schools and at home. This invention eventually replaced with the typewriters and with the help of this tool new style of teaching was familiarized by providing visual images of cells, tissues, human organs, parts of plants and animals both for lower and higher classes.

Educational CD’s, DVD’s

It is a software-based tool which has both the audio and video presentations including video clippings, 3d animation, powerpoint presentations, visual images and live experiments on different topics. This software can be easily used by installing either on the computer or in laptops. This invention eventually replaced with the use of floppies charts, posters, etc.

Digital classrooms with smart board

This new methodology of teaching with an interactive board which functions as a full-screen computer. This invention eventually replaced with the overhead projector. The main advantages of using this digital class in schools are:

  1. It is a time-saving process and reduces the use of paper, both by lectures and students.
  2. This tool includes touchscreen capabilities, where students can learn in new ways by participating, sharing and interacting with the smart board.
  3. With the assistance of this technology, students can view the complete working model of human organs, 3d structure of biomolecules like protein, carbohydrates, amino acids, and other subject related images which are not clearly displayed in textbooks.
  4. Both teacher and students can share their assignments and other related study materials.

The Educational tablets and Applications

Apart from CD’s and DVD’s, it is a new mode of m-learning available in the software application that can be easily downloaded on any android mobiles and on tablets. There are several educational Apps introduced for different courses and has been launched with an objective to make students fall in love with learning. It is helpful for both teachers and students of different classes as this application is designed in such a way that it includes complete syllabus along with engaging video lessons, solved model papers, tips, and guidance for clearing both board and other entrance exams including CAT, JEE, UPSC, NEET, etc.

The new style of teaching led an interactive session between the students and lectures. Today every educational institute is succeeded by using this changed method of teaching from the blackboard to the smart boards, from teacher’s lectures to interactive classes, etc. There are several applications introduced and are in Java programming language. It can be easily installed on tablets and on smartphones. These technologies encourage students to be active during the class hours, take down the important points and at last, it will increase student’s concentration in the classroom.
